Privacy Policy for Pitura.
Last updated: 2026-10-15
This Privacy Policy explains how the Pitura mobile application (“Pitura”, “the app”, “we”) handles information when you use it. Pitura reads colours with your iPhone’s camera, names them and keeps them on boards. It is published by Sime Basioli (contact: sime@sikira.co).
We designed Pitura to be privacy-friendly by default: we do not run our own servers, we do not have user accounts, and we do not track you. What you capture stays on your device and, if you choose, in your own private iCloud.
Summary
We do not collect, store, or transmit any personally identifiable information.
We do not use analytics, crash reporting, advertising, or tracking SDKs.
Camera frames are analysed on your device and immediately discarded; no photo or video is saved.
Your boards, colours and pairs are stored on your device and, if iCloud backup is on, in your own private iCloud database, which we cannot access.
Your preferences are stored only on your device.
1. Information we process
1.1 Camera
Pitura uses your device camera solely to read colours from the live preview (NSCameraUsageDescription on iOS). Camera frames are analysed in memory on your device and discarded. Pitura does not save photos or video, and nothing from the camera is uploaded or shared with us or any third party.
1.2 Photos
You can read colours from a photo you choose. The photo is selected through the system photo picker, which gives Pitura only the photo you pick. Pitura cannot read, browse, or manage the rest of your library. The chosen photo is read in memory and not kept.
When you save a picture that Pitura made (a colour, pair or board) to your photo library, it is added through the system share sheet, which asks for add-only permission (NSPhotoLibraryAddUsageDescription on iOS). Pitura cannot read your existing photos.
1.3 Boards, colours and pairs
The colours you capture, the boards, scenes and pairs you make, and the names, labels and notes you give them are stored in the app’s local database on your device.
If “iCloud backup” is turned on in Pitura’s settings (it is on by default when you are signed in to iCloud), the same data is mirrored to your private iCloud database through Apple’s CloudKit. It is stored in your own iCloud account under Apple’s privacy policy (https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/). We, the developer, cannot see or access it. You can turn iCloud backup off at any time in Pitura’s settings.
1.4 Preferences
The following preferences are saved in the app’s local storage on your device only:
Haptics, sounds and torch on/off
iCloud backup on/off
Contrast standard (WCAG or APCA) and calibration reference
Number of colours in a scene palette
How boards and their contents are sorted and grouped
The last board you saved to
The last calibration, so it can be reused in the same light
Onboarding completion flag
These values never leave your device and can be removed by uninstalling the app.
2. Information we do NOT collect
Pitura does not collect, process, or have access to:
Your name, email, phone number, or any account identifier.
Your location, contacts, calendar, or microphone.
Your photo library — Pitura only sees a photo you pick, and can only add new pictures.
Advertising identifiers (IDFA, GAID).
Analytics events, crash reports, or telemetry.
Purchase, payment, or billing information (Pitura has no in-app purchases).
Browsing history or data from other apps.
Pitura has no login, no user accounts, and no ads.
3. Third-party services
Pitura does not use any third-party services, SDKs, or external data providers. The only service it uses is Apple’s iCloud (CloudKit), to keep a copy of your boards in your own private iCloud database when iCloud backup is on. All colour reading and processing happens on your device using Apple’s on-device frameworks. Nothing is sent to us.
The colour names in the app come from public lists (CSS named colours, the xkcd colour survey and the open color-names dataset). They are bundled with the app; no lookup is made online.
4. Legal basis for processing (GDPR)
For users in the European Economic Area, the legal bases for processing are:
Consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR): for access to the camera when you grant the camera permission, and for adding pictures to your photo library when you grant that permission.
Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR): for local on-device processing of camera frames, your boards and your preferences, which is strictly necessary to provide the app’s functionality.
You can withdraw camera or photo permission at any time via your device’s system settings. Doing so does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before withdrawal.
5. Your rights
Because we do not collect or store your personal data on our servers, there is nothing we can access, modify, export, or delete on your behalf. You retain full control on your device:
Revoke camera access: iOS Settings → Pitura → Camera.
Revoke photo-adding access: iOS Settings → Pitura → Photos.
Export your data: any board can be exported from the app, as a file or a picture.
Delete your data: delete a colour, pair or board in the app, and it is removed from your device and from your iCloud copy. Uninstalling Pitura removes everything stored on your device.
Delete your iCloud copy: iOS Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Storage (or Storage) → Pitura → Delete Data.
Users in the EU/EEA have rights under GDPR (access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection). Users in California have rights under the CCPA (right to know, right to delete, right to opt out of sale — we do not sell data). To exercise any rights or ask questions, contact us at sime@sikira.co.
6. Data retention
We do not retain any user data on our servers because we do not operate servers. Data stored on your device remains until you delete it or uninstall the app. Data in your private iCloud database remains until you delete it in the app or in your iCloud settings.
7. Children’s privacy
Pitura collects no personal information from anyone, including children. In practice, the app does not collect information that could identify anyone. If you have any concerns, please contact us.
8. International data transfers
Pitura uses no servers of ours, so no personal data is transferred to us. If iCloud backup is on, your data is stored by Apple in your iCloud account, under Apple’s privacy policy and data-transfer safeguards.
9. Security
Your boards are stored in the app’s private storage on your device, protected by iOS. If iCloud backup is on, they are stored in your private iCloud database, which only you can access when signed in to your Apple Account. Local preferences are stored using the platform’s standard preferences storage (iOS UserDefaults).
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top reflects the latest revision. Material changes will be communicated within the app or alongside an app update. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the revised policy.
